Choosing your wedding photographer

Perhaps the most important decision you will make regarding your wedding day is selecting your photographer. I was at a wedding recently where the photographer (and his assistant) forgot to take pictures of the bride coming down the aisle. It was an outdoor wedding at an elegant mansion and as I turned around to watch the bride and I saw the photographer (and his assistant) 40 yards away, peering over a fence out into the distance. I pulled out my trusty camera and started shooting.

To avoid near disasters like this, you should choose from five to eight photographers to interview for your wedding day. Because photography is a large percentage of your wedding budget, choose your wedding photographer carefully with an understanding that you are going to have to work closely with this individual (or team) for most of your wedding day.

Go into your meetings with photographers armed with a list of what you want from the photographer that you will choose. If you want the final product delivered electronically or on DVD, make sure that you discuss this upfront and that it is in your final contract.

Select a photographer whose other work you admire. Like all art, photographers tend to have a style that is consistent throughout all of their work. Decide which photographer's vision, professionalism and product closely matches your expectations and make sure you get everything in writing before you sign a contract or pay any fees.

With digital editing, any photograph can be turned into black and white, but a wedding that is shot purely as black and white can be stunning and create art quality imagery to last a lifetime.
